Xitlali Kaia Sandoval
Xitlali Sandoval (b. Hollywood, CA) is a photographer raised by a multicultural family in North East Los Angeles (NELA, CA). Sandoval depicts BIPOC from a cultural perspective and addresses different aspects and issues of gentrification that reshaped the community that she inhabits. Sandoval’s practice reaffirms her bonds with her community and everyday life through storytelling as she considers using film photography as being a sacred tradition passed down by the artist’s father.

Sandoval’s latest work,
‘Momotzli (Altar)’ 2023 is a photograph captured on a Monday morning at Sandoval’s Grandmother’s Cemetery Home. There are Symmetrical trees all along the background. In the foreground you see two vintage benches and a water fountain in the center surrounded by grass. This photograph depicts Sandoval visiting and honoring her grandmother’s tombstone.
